A selection of 'Drums for Peace' Poems...
As part of Drums for Peace, pupils from the 5 schools wrote poetry on the theme of peace. A booklet of poems was produced, which was judged by Dominic Cogan, a local writer and teacher. The winning poem was written by one of our own pupils, Lauren O’Reilly (4th Class). Here are some of the poems...
Drums for Peace - by Lauren O’Reilly (4th class) St Conleth’s NS Derrinturn, Co Kildare, Ireland
- Drumrolls echoing all around
- Rhythms felt through our feet
- Unity touched by the sound
- Moving to the beat
- Soothing our hearts
- Filling our soul where we stand
- Opening our ears to the sound
- Reaching out hand in hand
- Pounding all through the land
- Every drumroll calling out
- And pouring us into a
- Circle of
- Everlasting peace
Making a Choice - by Connor Doyle (6th Class) St. Conleth’s NS, Derrinturn, Co Kildare, Ireland
- Peace-building starts with us
- It does not need a huge, big fuss.
- You just need to know wrong from right
- And then you won’t wish to start a fight.
- Why people can’t just give a smile
- And stop war even for a little while?
- So, please, just drop your guns and swords
- And listen to my encouraging words:
- Love all living things in our world
- And make our flag of peace unfurl.
Together - by Erika Phelan & Shauna Kavanagh (5th class) St Conleth’s NS Derrinturn, Co Kildare
- Together
- Happy and friendly
- Shaking hands, playing games, forgiving;
- Feeling lucky, relaxed, peaceful and loving,
- It’s peace.
Weapons - by Arron Hall & Colette Craven (6th Class) St Conleth’s NS Derrinturn, Co Kildare
- Weapons of war - Weapons of peace
- machine guns - hope
- closed fist - open hand
- murder - love
- bombs - smiles
- terror - truth
- anger - patience
- death - cube of love
- Weapons of war: a bomb or a gun
- Weapons of peace: patience and fun.
- Weapons of war are hurtful and gloomy
- Weapons of peace are loving and blooming
- Weapons of war; hurt, anger and rage
- Weapons of peace make you happy at any age.
- All war must be stopped before we too get angry
- Give peace to the world, your friend and your family.
War and Peace - by Adam Duffy, Shannon Kearney, Leah Herbert and Ciana Hall (5th Class) St Conleth’s National School Derrinturn, Co Kildare, Ireland
- War is the darkest black
- You can smell it a mile away like a rotting corpse
- It tastes like hard breadrolls
- It sounds like a very bad storm
- And feels like a bullet being shot at your head
- Peace is like bright yellow sunshine
- It’s like a river flowing gently
- It smells like daffodils growing in spring
- It tastes like pancakes smothered in ice-cream
- It sounds like the sweet music of children singing
- And feels like a soft woolly jumper
- Peace lives in all our hearts.
